A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the video.
We are checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
