Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story begins when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
