Thousands Join Pro-Palestinian Rallies as Organizers Promise to Continue Demonstrating

Tens of thousands assembled across Australia at rallies supporting Palestine, with organizers promising to continue protesting after a peace arrangement negotiated by the former US president in Gaza showed early signs of stability.

Sydney March Draws Large Crowd

In the harbor city, the activist collective said 30,000 people had demonstrated from the public gardens to Belmore Park in the downtown area after a planned rally to the Opera House was prohibited by the legal authorities recently.

Law enforcement estimated 8,000 people joined the city demonstration, with a spokesperson reporting there had been "no significant incidents".

Countrywide Protests Commemorate Date

Demonstrations were also organized in Victoria's capital, eastern city and west coast metropolis on Sunday to remember 24 months of conflict after armed incidents on 7 October 2023 caused significant casualties in the neighboring country.

"Regarding our cause, we'll absolutely continue to demonstrate for Palestinian freedom... for autonomy in the territory, for support to reach and for Palestinians to be able to rebuild Gaza," said an activist.

Mixed Reactions to Truce Arrangement

Numerous demonstrators voiced optimism that the truce might bring permanent peace. Some were doubtful of American participation and called on activists to maintain pressure on the national authorities to sanction Israel and end the trade in military goods.

A participant, a Palestinian Australian based in Australia, said he hoped the arrangement could permit him to bring his elderly mother, who is still in Gaza without medical attention, to Australia, and to discover and lay to rest his brother, sister-in-law and their four children, who have been lost contact in 2023.

Local Jewish Population Organizes Memorial

Separately, numerous people joined a Jewish community commemoration on Sunday night in Sydney's eastern suburbs to remember the occasion of the October attacks. A participant, the family member of someone affected, an local resident who was deceased in the incident, was scheduled to speak.

There were wishes for quick release of 20 remaining hostages in the region and those who lost their lives. The foreign envoy, Amir Maimon, recognized the resolve of survivors. The audience expressed disapproval when he referenced the head of government and the top diplomat.

Boat Activists Describe Ordeals

The local protest earlier heard from speakers including several locals freed from custody after the halting of the activist vessels recently.

A participant, his injured limb after it was allegedly dislocated in an incarceration center, told that limited details were clear about the peace agreement. Worldwide assistance agencies, including relief organizations, were preparing to enter Gaza.

"As long as there is a situation where there's a severe and prohibited barrier on the region," said the participant, boat protesters would keep working to deliver aid by sea.

Another participant, who came back to the city on the end of the week, gave an emotional speech recounting his imprisonment with dozens of fellow detainees in an incarceration center.

Official Comments

The political representative the politician addressed participants: "We cannot let a reality where the former president decides the destiny of Palestinians to be the kind of world that we live in."

One activist who made the first proposal to protest at the iconic venue asserted that the protesters could have safely headed to the famous harbourside venue. The NSW police assistant commissioner had previously stated the court of appeal that the arrangement appeared dangerous.

The organiser commented during the protest: "Whenever the law enforcement seeks to prevent our demonstrations or court proceedings, it wakes up a lot of people... to the need to mobilise and resist these measures."
