The Two Fatalities Identified in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Manhunt for Gunman.

The pair of scholars who were killed in Saturday’s mass shooting in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter persisted following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared condolences online, stating: “There are no words. Remembering her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the Ivy League university, family members said.

His name was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.

What Happened

Nine other people were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 arrested in a search at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Community Anxiety

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “This will probably generate new worry for our city”.

The shooter opened fire inside a room in the engineering facility on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the news agency.

Law enforcement that searched the hotel found two firearms and two ammunition clips when the suspect was detained, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, a single scholar was released from the hospital, stated Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

More Condolences

Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at the university she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his potential.”

National Context

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about 7,300 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
