The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage makes club history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
