The French Premier Resigns After Less Than a Month Amid Broad Criticism of New Ministers
France's political crisis has worsened after the freshly installed PM unexpectedly quit within a short time of appointing a government.
Quick Departure During Government Instability
France's latest leader was the third premier in a single year, as the country continued to lurch from one parliamentary instability to another. He stepped down hours before his first cabinet meeting on the start of the week. Macron received Lecornu's resignation on the beginning of Monday.
Intense Criticism Over Fresh Government
Lecornu had faced intense backlash from rival parties when he announced a recent administration that was virtually unchanged since last month's removal of his former PM, François Bayrou.
The announced cabinet was controlled by Macron's political partners, leaving the administration largely similar.
Rival Criticism
Opposition parties said Lecornu had stepped back on the "major shift" with previous policies that he had pledged when he came to power from the unpopular Bayrou, who was ousted on 9 September over a suggested financial restrictions.
Next Government Course
The uncertainty now is whether the national leader will decide to terminate the legislature and call another sudden poll.
Jordan Bardella, the leader of the opposition figure's opposition group, said: "We cannot achieve a return to stability without a new election and the parliament's termination."
He added, "Obviously Emmanuel Macron who decided this administration himself. He has failed to comprehend of the political situation we are in."
Vote Demands
The far-right party has demanded another election, thinking they can expand their representation and influence in parliament.
The country has gone through a phase of turmoil and political crisis since the national leader called an unclear early vote last year. The assembly remains split between the political factions: the left, the conservative wing and the centre, with no clear majority.
Budget Pressure
A financial plan for next year must be approved within weeks, even though government factions are at disagreement and his leadership ended in barely three weeks.
Opposition Vote
Factions from the progressive side to far right were to hold gatherings on Monday to decide whether or not to approve to oust Lecornu in a no-confidence vote, and it looked that the administration would fall before it had even started work. Lecornu apparently decided to leave before he could be removed.
Ministerial Positions
Nearly all of the key cabinet roles revealed on Sunday night remained the same, including the legal affairs head as justice minister and Rachida Dati as culture minister.
The responsibility of economic policy head, which is vital as a divided parliament struggles to pass a budget, went to the president's supporter, a Macron ally who had earlier worked as economic sector leader at the start of his current leadership period.
Unexpected Selection
In a surprise move, a longtime Macron ally, a Macron ally who had worked as economy minister for seven years of his leadership, returned to administration as national security leader. This enraged politicians across the various parties, who considered it a sign that there would be no questioning or modification of his corporate-friendly approach.
