The England manager Questions Wembley Crowd Support Despite Comfortable Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his regret that the Three Lions team did not enjoy greater backing from the home spectators during their decisive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday evening.
The manager was pleased to see his side maintain their strong performance, with goals from Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the initial stages deciding the match. Yet, he was displeased with the energy at the national stadium.
“We had one and a half sessions to get ready against a organized team and we did very well,” Tuchel remarked. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We missed the additional ones. It was quiet. There was no support from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you give in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them escape. When you only hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s sad because the team deserved better encouragement today.”
“I stand by my words. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a rivalry match. I hoped for a greater support in moments where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to recharge, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Display
Apart from potentially starting a dispute among supporters, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. But the decision was justified by Morgan Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“That’s his style,” the head coach noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his spot.”
Wales Manager Seeks Improvement from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that his team, who host a strong Belgian side in a important World Cup qualifier on Monday, improve after their poor first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this game,” the manager said. “I wanted to assess our standing. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today gives me inspiration.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was substituted at half-time after clattering into a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team play their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
