The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Does the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
