Formula 1 has introduced the simplified language that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is implementing what is potentially the most significant rules overhaul in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, requiring significant developments in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, drivers will carefully oversee battery power – sometimes even flying laps – to extract the optimal result.

Wide-ranging research were undertaken with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to understand which terminology would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the upcoming rules.

The stated goal was to present a range of advanced technical aspects of the racing as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Exploring the New Tech

According to rule-makers that competitors will have increased agency to determine tactics regarding battery management, energy recovery, and efficiency.

The new regulations introduce a series of modes that will be shown on television graphics to improve the fans' insight of the strategic duel.

  • Overtake Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a competitor is within one second the leading car to execute an pass.

Total aerodynamic grip is projected to decrease by approximately 15-30%, although teams will naturally regain performance as they develop their cars.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will utilize moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straights to improve speed and enhance velocity and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Pirelli tyres will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be narrower, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the ICE and the battery and motor, up from about 20% electrical this year.

The energy recovery system is made less complex through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive device that generated electricity from the turbo.
