Nuno Espírito Santo Makes Building West Ham Philosophy His Top Priority
The new West Ham manager feels it will take time to develop a clear philosophy at West Ham United. Having previously managed Forest, who is adjusting to his recent appointment, aims to forge a relationship with the team’s heritage on an emotional level.
Discovering the West Ham Way
Hired after the abrupt departure of the previous manager, Nuno mentioned that longstanding staff have been filling him in about the club’s inner workings. Upon questioning about his view of the famous “West Ham way”, he smiled and admitted that it means different things—for some it’s as all-out offense, while others value fighting spirit.
“It’s exactly what I’m working to grasp every day,” he explained. “It goes beyond knowing—we have to feel it. I need time to feel it. When it becomes part of us, we must embody it fully.”
He emphasized that feeling is crucial, instead of theoretical knowledge. On the topic of style and culture, Nuno conceded they are not yet close from making it a reality. “It’s not enough the ‘West Ham way’—we have to develop it, we must feel it.”
Starting Period and Future Challenges
His time in charge kicked off with an encouraging share of the points away to Everton. Questioned about the proximity he is to forming a team identity, he responded, “In my opinion very far. It’s a tough task and demands total commitment at the club. Yet it remains crucial.”
There is often a expectation from followers for attacking play. David Moyes, the most successful West Ham boss, came under criticism due to his practical style. Later coaches had difficulties changing the playing philosophy in the years following his exit.
Style of Play and Team Structure
The responsibility now lies with Nuno to determine whether winning are the main goal than entertainment. West Ham have let in a high number of goals in their first six Premier League games and currently sit in 19th place.
“What shapes the team’s approach is not just the manager,” he explained. “It depends on the players that influences how we play. It’s essential to find a balance between offense and defense. We cannot going forward without structure, as that opens up spaces for rival teams. We have to defend and organize, while also keeping in mind what we do after winning possession.”
Team News
West Ham could welcome back key defenders for the upcoming fixture at Arsenal. Also, the head coach suggested a potential return for an experienced midfielder who was not included in the last match. He had a brief stint under the manager previously, though his loan spell was concluded prematurely.
