The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.
