JPMorgan Chase Mandates Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Headquarters Entry

The financial institution has informed staff members working at its recently built main office in Manhattan that they must provide their biological identifiers to access the multibillion-dollar skyscraper.

Move from Discretionary to Compulsory

The financial firm had initially intended for the enrollment of physical identifiers at its new tower to be optional.

However, staff of the biggest American bank who have started operations at the main office since August have obtained communications stating that biometric entry was now "compulsory".

How Biometric Access Works

The new entry system requires employees to provide their hand geometry to enter access portals in the entrance area instead of swiping their identification cards.

Headquarters Details

The bank's headquarters, which apparently cost three billion dollars to construct, will eventually serve as a base for thousands of workers once it is fully occupied later this year.

Safety Justification

The banking institution opted not to respond but it is assumed that the employment of biometric data for entry is intended to make the premises better protected.

Alternative Access Methods

There are special provisions for specific personnel who will still be able to use a badge for access, although the requirements for who will use more traditional ID access remains unspecified.

Supporting Mobile Applications

Alongside the implementation of palm and eye scanners, the organization has also released the "Work at JPMC" smartphone application, which acts as a electronic pass and center for staff resources.

The platform permits employees to manage visitor access, navigate indoor maps of the facility and pre-order dining from the premises' multiple food service providers.

Industry-Wide Trends

The deployment of tighter entry controls comes as business organizations, particularly those with significant operations in the city, look to enhance safety following the attack of the CEO of one of the leading healthcare providers in July.

The CEO, the boss of the healthcare company, was killed in the incident not far from the financial district.

Future Expansion Possibilities

It is not known if the banking institution plans to deploy physical identifier entry for staff at its locations in other key banking hubs, such as the UK capital.

Corporate Surveillance Context

The move comes during discussion over the use of digital tools to track workers by their organizations, including observing workplace presence.

In recent months, all JP Morgan workers on mixed remote-office plans were told they are required to come back to the workplace five days a week.

Management Commentary

The company's leader, the financial executive, has characterized the bank's state-of-the-art skyscraper as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the company.

The banker, one of the global financial leaders, lately alerted that the probability of the American markets facing a downturn was much more substantial than many market participants believed.
