European Union maritime units have successfully rescued two dozen crew members from a Maltese-flagged petroleum vessel that was targeted by pirates off the shoreline of Somalia.

The Hellas Aphrodite, which was carrying fuel from India to South African destinations, was seized on the recent incident when armed pirates began shooting with machine guns and explosive projectiles before taking control of the ship.

All sailors secured themselves inside a fortified citadel while the attackers assumed command of the marine transport.

Successful Rescue Operation

A Spanish warship, operating under the European Union's maritime security operation, arrived at the ship on the following day. Elite military units boarded the craft and found all 24 crew members unharmed.

"All personnel is secure and no injuries have been documented. Throughout the ordeal, they stayed in the secure area in direct contact with command center," authorities announced, noting that a "show of force" had prompted the attackers to leave the vessel before the warship arrived.

Ongoing Threat

Authorities added that the danger level in the region "remains critical" as the armed groups are continue to be in the area.

The rescue operation utilized a aircraft, drone and reconnaissance plane. Just hours earlier, another ship in the identical region was targeted by a small speedboat but successfully avoided it.

Return of Maritime Crime

This event marks the most recent in a spate of attacks that have created concern about a renewal of maritime crime in the region.

Such activity had declined when international naval patrols and security measures were introduced after reaching their highest point more than a decade ago.

However, attacks by militant groups on vessels in the Red Sea, which have been conducted for the past two years, have caused ships to be rerouted through the African coastline - creating new opportunities for Somali gangs.

Incident Data

  • Multiple piracy cases of maritime crime occurred off the shoreline of the Somali region last year
  • Three hijackings were documented among these incidents
  • A single case of maritime crime was reported in 2023

Industry professionals continue to monitor the situation as vessel operators travel through these potentially hazardous waters.
