Synthetic images claiming to show Nicolás Maduro detained following his capture by the American authorities have garnered tens of millions of views online.
The Way Fake Pictures of the President Surfaced Soon After
The first fake AI image seemingly displaying him being escorted off a plane emerged a brief time later. The graphic was not shared any authoritative US channels; it was instead posted on X by an profile purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Verification involved the SynthID tool, confirming the image was produced or modified with AI tools.
More synthetic images began to spread in the ensuing hours, purporting to present different views of Maduro under guard. Discernible identifying marks on these images reveal they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
AI analysis says these additional images were likewise generated or edited generative models.
Real Photo Posted but Fabrications Continued
The former US president shared the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. But even after this confirmation was published, synthetic pictures continued to spread but were altered to incorporate the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.
Reverse image searches show the new fake images were originally uploaded on the video platform by a digital art profile. Similarly, analysis found the new graphics were created or altered Google AI.
