Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Team While McCarthy Omitted
Returning head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Doris in his Irish team for the fall internationals, but Joe McCarthy is absent.
Doris, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are not included because of injury, and full-back Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new member in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".
After playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen as Farrell opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of his province's three league games so far and played in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.
Southern province lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Ulster second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for the captain should the skipper fails to recover full fitness in time to face New Zealand.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
