Award-Winning Creator Gilligan Shares the Sci-Fi Influences For The New Series Titled Pluribus
After an extended hiatus away from sci-fi storytelling, Vince Gilligan is staging a return back to where he began. Starting out with The Iconic X-Files, where he wrote 30 episodes, plus also crafting the script for Will Smith’s film Hancock, the creator devoted recent years focused on the world from Breaking Bad Universe. Now, with his new Apple TV project Pluribus, he’s coming back home to the genre that launched his journey.
A Mysterious Premise with Cryptic Trailers
The storyline and premise of Pluribus remain closely guarded. Promotional clips and previews have all been intentionally vague. For example, a brief scene depicts a woman by herself in an office at night calmly lifting donuts out of a box labeled “Help yourself!” and licking them prior to placing them neatly back in the box. Critics cannot reveal to say details regarding the show’s thrilling premiere, except the fact the narrative begins when our modern world transforms in a significant way.
The Creator’s Science Fiction Recommendations
Because details about the story or production were off-limits, the showrunner fielded a simple question: What additional sci-fi shows or films ought viewers see to prepare before Pluribus?
“Each of the original and the remake adaptations from Invasion of the Body Snatchers; that's a good touchstone,” he states. “The Twilight Zone, that's always my favorite. The Thing, the John Carpenter film. I like each one, though I particularly love the John Carpenter version.”
A Love Letter to Sci-Fi Enthusiasts
For those who are a fan of sci-fi or horror, you will probably identify the tales that influenced Pluribus. Its inspirations are far from subtle — which is exactly the idea. The creator notes his aim for the new show was to play with sci-fi tropes.
“My thought process involved of every science fiction trope and horror conventions I could incorporate into this show, and then flip all of those tropes upside down,” he says. “ That’s what what tickled me.”
In other words: Pluribus serves as a sci-fi show for genre lovers. So if you approach the show being a Breaking Bad superfan who’s never been into science fiction, it’s wise to do some preparation in advance. The showrunner has now offered the curriculum.
Pluribus premieres Nov. 7 on Apple TV.
