2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. However, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's elevated place in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming appears particularly strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues facilitate a host of innovative control schemes.

A number of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

When these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be on the verge of a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
